Education and behavior modification are key
James P. “Pat” Howle, Executive Vice President and CEO
As I write this, we’re enjoying the mild temperatures of the fall. I love this time of year. We’re finally getting a break from the sizzling heat of summer. The mild temperatures this time of year give us a chance to take full advantage of nature’s air conditioning. If you’re like me, your windows are open and your air-conditioning system isn’t struggling to keep up with the thermostat setting.
We need to enjoy it while we can. Winter is right around the corner and our heating systems will be put to the test of keeping indoor temperatures at the level we set on our thermostats. The success of our systems to win the battle between outdoor temperatures and the temperature we expect in our homes is always, unfortunately, reflected in our electric bills.
There is hope
The weather has a huge impact on the amount of electricity you use. Understanding that is essential to being able to do something about it.
One of the best things you can do is stick with our recommendation of setting your thermostat at 68 in the winter and 78 in the summer. Set it and forget it. Moving the thermostat up or down even one degree can make a huge impact on the amount of energy you use. You won’t know what hit you until the electric bill arrives.
Keeping an eye on how much electricity you use each day is another proactive step you can take. Getting a reading from the Horry Electric meter on your home can be very enlightening. We recommend doing it at least once a day to track what you’re using from one day to the next. As you do, make a note of your activities during the day that may have required electricity.
We provide the tools
As your energy provider, we have the responsibility of safely and reliably delivering the energy you need, when and where you need it. As your electric cooperative, our mission is to provide information and energy-related services on a fair and equitable basis. Our job doesn’t end there.
Together We Save, the national energy awareness campaign developed by Touchstone Energy Cooperatives is named appropriately. We are in this together and, collectively, all the little changes we make can add up to big savings. Please join us in the effort by taking advantage of the tools available to you as a member of Horry Electric Cooperative. Visit horryelectric.com or call us at 369.2211 to learn more.
